The Role of Elevator Rope Grippers in Elevator Safety

Close-up of elevator rope gripper and mechanical safety components

When many people picture an elevator malfunction, they usually imagine the car descending uncontrollably at a high speed. But in reality, these types of failures are extremely rare because numerous safety systems are in place to prevent them.

Elevator rope grippers are one such component that prevents overspeeding in elevators. This system kicks into gear when the elevator detects certain types of malfunctions, helping keep passengers safe and stopping and holding the elevator car until the system is inspected and reset.

Learn the role of elevator rope grippers in modern systems, then explore upgrades to your elevator monitoring system for further peace of mind.

What Are Elevator Rope Grippers?

Elevator rope grippers are just what they sound like: machines that mechanically grip the elevator’s suspension ropes in the case of an electrical or mechanical failure. As a reminder, the suspension ropes are the belts that raise, lower, and hold the elevator car and its counterweight, allowing for smooth movement between floors.

Not all elevators have rope grippers. Suspension ropes are steel wire ropes that support and move the car and counterweight; some elevators use coated-steel belts instead. Hydraulic elevators, which move using a fluid-driven piston rather than overhead ropes, do not use these systems.

ASME A17.1, the North American safety code for elevators, requires traction elevators to include overspeed and unintended car movement protection. Rope grippers are an affordable way to meet this requirement, which is why most modern traction elevators include them.

How Elevator Rope Grippers Work

Elevatorsuse built-in sensors and monitoring systems to continually detect whether the system is operating safely. When an elevator’s safety system detects a fault or unsafe speed, they trigger the elevator rope grippers to kick into action.

These grippers use strong springs or hydraulic pressure to shut brake jaws tightly over the steel ropes. Rope grippers are carefully engineered to grip tightly enough to halt the car’s motion without cutting or permanently damaging the elevator ropes.

How Rope Grippers Help Keep Riders Safe

Elevator rope grippers serve as secondary protection to ensure the car stops safely in an emergency. These machines offer a few core safety functions:

  • Protection against unintended car movement: If a car begins to move away from the floor while the door is still open, the rope grippers will quickly halt the car and prevent further movement.
  • Protection against ascending car overspeed: If an empty or lightly loaded car begins malfunctioning and speeding toward the top of the hoistway, the rope grippers will prevent it from crashing into the top of the shaft.
  • Backup braking: Rope grippers can provide emergency braking if the main machine brakes fail.

This equipment limits the consequences of certain malfunctions by stopping the car.
