A Parents’ Guide to Elevator Safety Tips

Guide to Elevator Safety Tips

For many kids, elevators are practically magic: They step into a tiny room, press a button, and suddenly they’re on another floor. Truth be told, it can feel a little magical for adults, too. And thanks to features like elevator monitoring systems, it’s a safe and secure way to get where you need to be.

It may not always seem that way for parents. Elevators are full of perils, from buttons that are all too tempting to push to the potential for pinched fingers. This elevator parents’ guide has plenty of advice to help you and your little ones make the most of elevator rides, turning those “uh-oh” moments into “we’ve got this” confidence.

Make It a Team Sport

Rule #1 in our elevator parents’ guide? Adults should always supervise kids in the elevator. Toddlers might love to run ahead and press all the buttons, but that’s not only dangerous but also potentially irritating to other users.

Make supervised elevator use the norm; kids shouldn’t ride alone until they are at least 12 years old. Take a child awareness training approach and remind them to stay close, hold hands, and stand still, as elevators are not playgrounds.

That doesn’t mean you can’t have fun, though. Make a game out of spotting the floor numbers or guessing who’s getting off where, or spend some time learning how elevators work. The more they know, the more confident they’ll feel while using the elevator.

Safe Entry and Exit: Timing Is Everything

Entering and exiting the elevator are among the most hazardous moments of any ride, even with safety features that prevent the doors from closing on unsuspecting children (and adults). Teach kids the basics of a safe entry and exit: Wait until the doors are fully open before stepping in or out, and avoid blocking the doors with your hands or body.

Elevator Etiquette 101

The buttons on an elevator can be alluring to kids. Many have the urge to press them all at once and light up the control panel like a Christmas tree.

If you’re alone in the elevator and have the time, that might not be a big deal. But you should teach your little ones button etiquette, because it’s about safety as much as it is about manners. Let your child press the right button (just one!), and explain what each one does.

It’s also a good idea to teach them how to identify the emergency button and explain when and when not to use it. If they understand the emergency procedures, they’re more likely to stay calm until help arrives.

Make Every Elevator Ride a Safe One

While these elevator safety tips are for parents, they serve as valuable reminders for everyone. Millions of people ride them every day, so it’s a good idea to remember the basics of elevator safety.
